This guide explains the types of accommodation we use in France, how hotel categories work, and what you can typically expect during your stay.
⭐ Hotel categories and comfort levels
France uses a star rating system from 1 to 5 stars. In most Ophorus packages, we work with:
- 3★ hotels and guesthouses
Comfortable, well‑located, often with simple but pleasant rooms and friendly service. Good value for travelers who focus more on experiences than on hotel luxury. - 4★ hotels
Higher comfort level, more facilities and services, often boutique style or characterful properties in central locations or scenic settings. - 5★ hotels and luxury stays
Premium addresses, sometimes in historic buildings, châteaux or design hotels, with more space and services.
The star rating reflects facilities and services rather than style; a charming 3★ can sometimes feel more “French” than a very modern 4★. When you contact us, you can indicate whether you prefer 3★, 4★, 5★ or a mix.
📍 Where your accommodation is located
We prioritise locations that make your days easier and more enjoyable:
- City stays – hotels in or near historic centres so you can walk to cafés, restaurants and main sights.
- Village and countryside stays – in or near the centre of a village, or in scenic rural settings with views and easy access to touring routes.
- Coastal stays – properties close to the seafront, harbour or beach promenades, where possible within walking distance.
🧳 What is usually included (and what is not)
In many packages, your accommodation will typically include:
- Room in the chosen hotel category
- Often breakfast each morning (this depends on the specific package; we indicate it clearly)
- Basic services such as daily housekeeping and reception assistance
- Lunches and dinners (we often leave these free so you can choose restaurants)
- City taxes, where applicable, payable directly at the hotel
- Extras such as spa treatments, minibar, room service or parking fees
👨👩👧 Families and room types
If you are traveling as a family or small group, we can plan:
- Twin rooms, double rooms or family rooms, depending on hotel and availability
- Connecting rooms or adjacent rooms when possible for parents and children
- Baby cots or extra beds on request, subject to each hotel’s policies
♿ Mobility and accessibility
Accessibility differs from one hotel and region to another, especially in historic buildings and older town centres. If anyone in your party:
- Uses a wheelchair or mobility aid
- Has difficulty with stairs or long walks
- Needs an accessible bathroom or lift access
🍽️ Atmosphere and local flavourBeyond star ratings, we also pay attention to:
- Atmosphere – warm welcome, pleasant décor, calm ambiance
- Local character – regional touches, traditional architecture or views that feel “of the place”
- Neighbourhood feel – easy access to restaurants, markets and evening strolls
This is particularly important in wine regions and historic towns, where staying in the right part of town adds a lot to the experience.
